“Art is everywhere, and everyone makes art, says Thompson, CT painter Donna O’Scolaigh Lange. I feel fortunate to be able to live and work in this beautiful area where inspiration is around every corner.”
Lange began her career as a graphic artist, illustrating children’s fictional and educational books. Oils are her preferred medium now, but something of the children’s book illustrations seems to color many of her paintings with a gentle golden glow. “I do like to create a magical world where myth and reality come together, and there is the hint of a story somewhere.”
“Lange describes the Impressionist painters and the American Scene movement as a big influence on her. The Impressionists are known for their ability to convey brilliant light, often painting on a white or light canvas rather than the brown-toned backgrounds of the old masters. American Scene painters, such as Edward Hopper, painted the local, the common, and the ordinary. I like to do local scenes-fields and barns, peoples’ backyard clotheslines, and odd angles of buildings.”
The above has been adapted from a “Profile of a Newsmaker” by Wendy Kirkland published in the Norwich Bulletin.
